Ursprünglich als "Mitteilungsblatt" (so lautete der Untertitel bis Bd. 12, 1981, H. 1) konzipiert und realisiert, hat sich der Deutschunterricht in Südafrika (seit 1990: ... im Südlichen Afrika} - vor allem unter der langjährigen Herausgeberschaft zuerst Klaus von Delfts und dann Klaus Mencks - zu einer sprach- und literaturdidaktischen Fachzeitschrift von Format gemausert. Der DUSA hat dem Fach DaF in der Region wesentliche Impulse vermittelt und seine Entwicklung über fast drei Jahrzehnte hin kritisch begleitet.

Zuletzt 1998 im Druck erschienen, ist der DUSA am 15.9.2006 als eDUSA in elektronischer Form wieder auferstanden.

"DEUTSCHUNTERRICHT IN SÜDAFRIKA [...] is to serve as a supplement to the ACTA GERMANICA. Its aim is to further the study of German language and literature on the basis of problems experienced in practical teaching and learning situations [...]. Each volume should therefore contain contributions of linguistic-didactic or literary content, material for drill/exercises, reviews, letterbox [...].

The Editorial Committee shall consist of one Editor and three Co-Editors and shall be voted into office for four consecutive years at a General Meeting of the Association. The Editor shall [...] request contributions, prepare the manuscripts and supervise the distribution of the edition. The Editorial Committee shall be responsible to the General Meeting of all members of the Association. [...]. The Editor of DEUTSCHUNTERRICHT IN SÜDAFRIKA shall, ex officio, be a member of the Executive Committee of the Association. "
